The Katsina State Government has unveiled its initiative to procure 400,000 bags of fertiliser, which will be distributed to farmers across all 34 local government areas of the state. This move aims to enhance food production and counter the recent surge in food prices.
During the launch of a two-day State Level Conflict Prevention and Mitigation Dialogue, organized by Mercy Corps in partnership with the State Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Prof. Ahmed Mohammed, revealed this plan. He emphasized that the procurement of fertiliser is aligned with Governor Dikko Umaru Radda's strategic plan to bolster agricultural production and ensure that farmers have access to high-quality inputs such as seeds and pesticides for a bountiful harvest.
Prof. Mohammed further stated, "I have been tasked by His Excellency, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, to secure 400,000 bags of fertiliser for distribution to farmers throughout the state for the upcoming farming season. This initiative will significantly enhance food production in the state." He also affirmed that the state government will persist in supplying improved agricultural inputs and machinery while creating a conducive environment for farmers to elevate their productivity.
Additionally, the commissioner highlighted that farmland in Jibia local government, which had been abandoned for over two decades due to conflicts between farmers and herders, has been reopened for farming activities due to the government's efforts to restore peace in the state.
However, Mohammed acknowledged that farming activities have been disrupted in Batsari, Kankara, Jibia, and Danmusa due to terrorist attacks. Nonetheless, he assured that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Radda, is unwavering in its commitment to fostering peace in the affected areas, allowing farmers to return to their ancestral homes and resume their agricultural activities.
