Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Department of Information head Benson Upah emphasized in an interview with ARISE NEWS that the value of the naira is crucial for labor negotiations.
Upah expressed uncertainty about the outcome of upcoming meetings and stated that labor is focused on realistic figures that reflect the value of the currency.
He highlighted four economic issues affecting the country and contributing to the weakening of the naira: the removal of fuel subsidy, devaluation of the naira, tariff hikes, and high interest rates. Upah urged the government to consider reversing these actions to improve the business environment.
Regarding the national minimum wage, Upah stressed the need for a figure that can support a family of six and stimulate capacity.
In response to criticism accusing labor leaders of being politicians, Upah defended their right to hold political opinions and emphasized that their concerns are purely patriotic and in the interest of the country.
He also stated that nothing less than $100 would be acceptable.
