Nnamdi Kanu's Legal Team Takes Action Against SSS Director General for Defying Court Order

The legal team representing the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has taken action against the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Yusuf Magai Bichi, for allegedly defying a court order.
The lawyers have accused the SSS Director General of blatantly disregarding the valid court order from the Federal High Court, which directed the SSS to provide a facility for Kanu's legal team to prepare for his defense in Charge No: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015.

On May 20, Justice B.F.M. Nyako, while rejecting Kanu’s bail application and his request to be transferred to a Nigerian Custodial Centre, ordered the SSS to provide Kanu with a secure and "clean" room at the present facility to prepare for his defense with his team of counsel not exceeding 5 in number. The court also ruled that his legal team should be allowed the necessary facilities for the preparation of his defense and to take notes.

In a Form 48 Notice of Consequences of Disobedience to the order of the court, filed on May 31, 2024, pursuant to order IX, Rule 13 of Sheriff and Civil Processes Act, CAP S6, the court notified Bichi that he would face imprisonment if found guilty of contempt of court for failing to comply with the directives contained in the court order.
