Former U.S. President Barack Obama expressed his support for President Joe Biden's proposed plan for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the war in Gaza.
In a post on his social media account, Obama praised the plan as clear, realistic, and just, emphasizing its potential to ensure Israel’s security, facilitate the return of hostages taken on October 7th, increase aid to Gaza, and alleviate the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
Additionally, Obama highlighted that the proposed plan aims to engage Israelis, Palestinians, Arab countries, and the broader international community in the process of rebuilding Gaza. However, he noted that while a ceasefire is essential, it alone cannot ease the pain experienced by those affected by the conflict.
Obama acknowledged that while the proposed plan may not resolve the longstanding conflict between Israelis and Palestinians or address contentious issues such as a two-state solution and settler activity in the West Bank, it has the potential to halt ongoing bloodshed, reunite families, and provide crucial humanitarian aid to those in desperate need.
He emphasized the importance of an enduring ceasefire, stating that it is a cause that should be supported by all, regardless of differing opinions on broader geopolitical debates. Obama also expressed his encouragement for the dedicated efforts of President Biden, Secretary of State Tony Blinken, and the diplomatic team in working towards bringing an end to the devastating war.
