Lagos, Nigeria – Chaos ensued in parts of Lagos as residents staged a protest, accusing Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) of fraudulent billing and extortion.
The aggrieved protesters claim that they have been unfairly charged an exorbitant N150,000 per compound, without proper metering or explanation.
Carrying placards with slogans like "Stop the Extortion" and "We Demand Transparency," the protesters decried the company’s alleged practice of inflating bills, leaving households with massive electricity charges.
According to the residents, these bills do not correspond to the power consumed, raising suspicions of fraudulent activities by the power company.
One of the protesters, Mrs. Chioma Adewale, expressed her frustration: “How can we be asked to pay N150,000 for electricity when we barely have power for more than a few hours a day? This is nothing but extortion.”
The residents are calling for an immediate review of the billing system and the installation of prepaid meters to ensure transparency in electricity charges.
In response, EKEDC has issued a statement urging calm and promising to investigate the claims.
The company insists it has always adhered to fair billing practices and will work to resolve any issues brought forward by the affected customers.
As tensions mount, residents are prepared to escalate the protest if their demands for a more transparent billing system are not met.
