In a dramatic raid, police operatives in Enugu State stormed a kidnappers' hideout, leading to the death of two suspects and the rescue of a kidnapped victim.
The operation, which took place on Monday, unfolded in a secluded area on the outskirts of Enugu City, after law enforcement received intelligence pinpointing the location of the notorious criminal den.
The Enugu State Police Command revealed that officers approached the hideout under the cover of darkness to catch the suspects off guard.
However, upon their arrival, the criminals opened fire, resulting in a fierce gunfight. Two of the suspects were fatally shot during the exchange, while others fled the scene, disappearing into the dense forest nearby.
The rescued victim, who had been held captive for days, was found tied up and visibly traumatized. He was immediately taken to a hospital for medical evaluation and is now recovering under police protection. Authorities have not yet disclosed the victim's identity, citing security concerns.
During the raid, police recovered several dangerous weapons, including firearms and ammunition, as well as personal items believed to belong to other victims of the kidnapping syndicate.
Enugu State Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe, who confirmed the successful operation, commended the bravery of the officers involved and assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects. "We will not relent until we have dismantled this criminal network and brought every member to justice," he stated.
The incident has sparked relief among local residents, who have been on edge due to a recent rise in abductions. Many see this operation as a strong message that law enforcement is determined to tackle violent crime and restore safety across the state.
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and provide any information that could assist in the ongoing manhunt for the remaining suspects.
