A tragic incident has shaken the Dagbolu community in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State, as a 25-year-old man, Joseph Abodunrin, reportedly ended his life due to the increasing cost of living in Nigeria, which he claimed was severely affecting his mental health.
The devastating news was confirmed on Thursday by a family member, Abodunrin Grace, through her X (formerly Twitter) handle. In a heartfelt tribute, she described Joseph as a beacon of encouragement who masked his struggles behind a facade of joy, only to succumb to his silent battles in a way no one had anticipated.
She wrote that she still felt shattered, unable to process many words. She described him as the best brother who encouraged everyone around him while hiding his own pain.
According to her, he went about with fake laughter and smiles, leaving them unable to comprehend the depth of his struggles. She added that none of their lamentations could bring him back and that the burden of loss was overwhelming.
She urged people to prioritize healing, emphasizing that everyone was struggling in one way or another and that mental well-being should never be neglected.
Before his untimely demise, Joseph left behind a series of distressing posts on social media, hinting at his struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts. In a tweet dated January 31, 2025, he revealed that the only thing stopping him from taking his life was his love for his younger siblings. He stated that if not for them, he would have already committed suicide, as they were still full of optimism, hope, and dreams that he did not want to crush with the news of his death.
However, on March 24, the day he took his own life, he penned a series of tweets signaling his final goodbye. He apologized for failing his loved ones and admitted that he could no longer continue. He expressed that no matter how he explained it, they would not understand.
He encouraged them to keep fighting, remain hopeful, and never negotiate their dreams, stating that his last wish was for them to thrive. In everything, he said he gave glory to God, acknowledging that he had run his race and given it everything he had.
Finally, he passed on the baton and bid farewell, revealing that his passwords were in the first page of his diary.
Earlier, on March 9, Joseph expressed his frustration with life and questioned his decision to keep holding on. He admitted that he had repeatedly asked himself why he should continue fighting to stay alive and had never received a meaningful answer.
He wrote that March was a decision month and that none of what he was experiencing was his fault. He stated that he had no control over his genetics or the circumstances of his birth. He revealed that he had tried to seek help, but doing so had only worsened his situation.
Despite this, he said he was practicing self-compassion throughout the process, regardless of whatever decision he ultimately made.
Despite Joseph sharing the location of his suicide in Dagbolu, reports indicate that the specified area is no longer active. As of the time of filing this report, his body has not yet been recovered.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, ASP Akeem Adeoye, stated that he was unaware of the incident but promised to provide updates if there were any developments.
He speculated that perhaps the family did not want the news to be public but assured that he would share any further information.
The deceased had just marked his 25th birthday on February 6, 2025, making the tragic loss even more heartbreaking for those who knew and loved him.
Joseph Abodunrin’s tragic story highlights the severe toll that economic hardship and mental health struggles are taking on young Nigerians.
His heartbreaking posts suggest he sought help but found little relief, underscoring the urgent need for better mental health support and awareness in the country.
As friends, family, and the community mourn his loss, his words serve as a solemn reminder to prioritize mental well-being and provide support to those battling depression.
