Senate Suspends Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for Six Months Over Misconduct

The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, for six months following allegations of misconduct and non-compliance with Senate proceedings.

The decision, made during Thursday’s plenary session, was based on the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

The suspension stems from sexual harassment allegations Akpoti-Uduaghan leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

She had accused Akpabio of obstructing her legislative motions, particularly those concerning the Ajaokuta Steel Company, and claimed he referred to her as a “nightclub girl” during a Senate session—an insult for which he later apologized.

Presenting the committee’s findings, Chairman Senator Neda Imasuen stated that Akpoti-Uduaghan was found guilty of all allegations due to her failure to appear before the panel to defend herself.

As part of the disciplinary measures, the Senate ordered the withdrawal of her salary and security details during the suspension period.

The committee also recommended that she issue a formal apology to the Senate for what was deemed disrespectful conduct.

The suspension has deepened the controversy surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations against Akpabio, who has denied any wrongdoing, emphasizing his respect for women and dismissing the claims as baseless.

With the Senate’s decision now in effect, Akpoti-Uduaghan is barred from accessing the National Assembly premises, and her office will remain locked for six months.

During deliberations, Senator Abba Moro pleaded for a reduction in the suspension, suggesting a three-month term instead of six.

"Three months is sufficient for some level of restitution," Moro argued. However, the Senate proceeded with the full suspension term as recommended by the Ethics Committee.

The development marks a significant moment in the ongoing power struggle within the Senate, raising questions about legislative accountability, internal conflicts, and the broader implications of gender dynamics in Nigerian politics.
