Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has voiced strong dissatisfaction over the state’s continued inability to generate revenue from its vast solid mineral resources.
Speaking during a state function on economic development, the governor described the situation as unacceptable, given the abundance of valuable minerals within Zamfara’s borders.
“It is deeply disappointing that despite our rich endowment of solid minerals, Zamfara State has not seen any meaningful income from this sector,” Governor Lawal said. “This is a glaring missed opportunity for economic growth and job creation.”
Zamfara is known to possess significant deposits of gold, copper, and other precious minerals, yet the sector remains largely informal and under-regulated.
Illegal mining activities, lack of investment in proper infrastructure, and insecurity have long plagued the state, contributing to the loss of potential revenue.
Governor Lawal emphasized the need for urgent reforms and stronger regulation to harness the sector’s potential. He called for collaboration between the state and federal governments, as well as private sector involvement, to establish a sustainable framework for mineral exploration and revenue generation.
“Our administration is committed to turning this situation around. We will pursue partnerships, strengthen legal frameworks, and enhance security to ensure that Zamfara benefits from the resources it is blessed with,” he added.
Stakeholders in the mining sector and civil society groups have echoed the governor’s concerns, urging transparency and accountability in any new initiatives aimed at unlocking the state's mineral wealth.
Governor Lawal’s comments highlight the broader challenge faced by many Nigerian states—abundant resources, yet limited economic returns—underscoring the urgent need for structural reforms in the country’s extractive industries.
