NNPC, marketers in war of words over fuel scarcity

The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation has assured the public that the fuel queues across the country will end next week.

The corporation has enough litres of fuel to put an end to the scarcity, and has blamed the continuing fuel shortage on panic buying and sharp practices by some petroleum marketers who are exploiting the situation to make more money.

The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria has confirmed that its members in Apapa and other locations in Lagos have received 300 million litres of fuel from eight vessels this week, and the government is doing its best to ensure massive distribution of PMS.

According to the South-West Regional Coordinator of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Ayo Cardoso, the product will soon be available across the country, with each state of the federation being allocated a specific quantity of fuel to be delivered accordingly.

Despite the NNPC's confidence, petroleum marketers have disputed their claims, insisting that inadequate supply is a major reason for the continuing fuel scarcity.

However, the NNPC has stated that it is not responsible for the distribution of fuel, and that it is the duty of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to ensure that filling stations are doing what they are supposed to do. Overall, the NNPC is confident in its ability to resolve the fuel scarcity issue and put an end to the queues at filling stations.
