During a live programme on Channel TV monitored by SaharaReporters on Sunday evening, former executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme and member of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Prof Usman Yusuf, criticized the government of Bola Tinubu for imposing heavy taxes on Nigerians despite the adverse effects of his policies on the country's socioeconomic landscape.
Usman expressed his concerns about the government's focus on extracting money from Nigerians rather than prioritizing the country's growth.
He highlighted the detrimental impact of the government's policies on poverty levels and the education system, emphasizing the government's persistence in imposing taxes despite the hardships faced by the citizens.
He lamented the disillusionment and destitution experienced by the people, pointing out the government's failure to deliver meaningful benefits to the ordinary citizens. Usman also criticized the government's approach to economic management, highlighting the emphasis on taxation rather than fostering production to drive economic growth.
According to report, Tinubu's government initiated toll collection at federal airports across the country, leading to concerns about potential extortion and racketeering.
Lagos State residents raised alarm over the alleged exploitation by officials at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in compliance with the toll collection directive, citing deliberate limitations on payment options and the potential for extortion due to the absence of electronic payment methods.
