The Federal Government has declared a public holiday on Wednesday, May 1st, in recognition of Workers' Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Aishetu Ndayako.
The Minister reiterated President Bola Tinubu's administration's commitment to promoting innovation, productivity, and inclusivity in all workplaces across the country.
The Government is committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of all workers, particularly within the context of climate change. This year's theme of the Workers' Day celebration centers around ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate.
The Minister stated that the Federal Government is steadfast in its resolve to prioritize the safety and well-being of all citizens.
He reaffirmed the President's commitment to providing a conducive environment for work, where every worker can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The Minister called on all Nigerians to support the Tinubu administration's Renewed Hope Agenda. He also extended his warm wishes for a joyous celebration to all workers in the country. Ahead of this year's Workers' Day celebration, labor unions have been agitating for an upward review of the minimum wage in the country.
Although the Federal Government has set up a committee to come up with an acceptable new minimum wage, it is unlikely that the President will announce a new minimum wage, as the committee has yet to conclude its work. The announcement of the public holiday on Workers' Day is a recognition of the significant contributions of workers to the economic growth and development of the country.
