Organized labor has confirmed that the planned indefinite strike on Monday will proceed, despite last-minute efforts by the National Assembly leadership to prevent it.
The labor representatives stated that they do not have the authority to call off the strike and emphasized that it will take place as scheduled.
However, they have committed to holding internal discussions later to consider the appeal made by the Senate and the House of Representatives to suspend the strike in order to minimize the impact on the Nigerian population.
In an attempt to avert the nationwide strike, the leadership of the National Assembly engaged in discussions with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Sunday evening at the National Assembly Complex.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen, as well as other senior officials, convened an emergency meeting with the organized labor in a bid to prevent the strike and facilitate a return to the negotiating table.
Presidents of the NLC and TUC, Comrade Joe Ajaero and Comrade Festus Osifo, were also present at the meeting.
