In a decisive move to stabilize governance, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has directed heads of local government administration (HLGAs) to assume control of the state's 23 council areas.
This directive follows the expiration of the three-year tenure of the elected local government chairmen, vice chairmen, and councillors.
In a broadcast on Tuesday, Governor Fubara urged HLGAs to take immediate and dedicated control of the councils.
He emphasized the necessity of upholding the constitution and ensuring law and order, calling on HLGAs to lead with renewed commitment in their respective areas.
Expressing gratitude for their service, Governor Fubara thanked the outgoing chairmen and councillors, acknowledging their contributions as their terms ended.
However, a significant transition crisis has erupted across the state's local governments. Tensions soared in Degema and Asari-Toru councils on Monday as youths seized control of their secretariats, reacting to the departure of the elected officials.
The unrest escalated with reports of armed youths in riverine areas and rumors that the governor had proposed names for seven-man caretaker committees to lawmakers for screening.
Adding to the turmoil, a viral video showed an unidentified leader of a joint task force on anti-bunkering threatening to escort the caretaker committees to councils and confronting the outgoing chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Samuel Nwanosike.
Amidst the escalating crisis, Rivers State Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu assured residents of enhanced security measures and urged compliance with legal directives to maintain peace.
Speaking from the police headquarters in Port Harcourt on Monday, CP Disu briefed journalists on the unfolding situation, calling on all political factions to cease hostilities while their legal disputes are resolved.
He reaffirmed the police's commitment to safeguarding lives and property, warning against any unlawful acts during this transitional period.
CP Disu also highlighted the readiness of his officers to secure council headquarters and maintain order throughout the state.
