On Monday, after six hours of discussions, the Nigerian government signed an agreement with the Organised Labour, promising that President Bola Tinubu is committed to a national minimum wage above N60,000.
This announcement was made by George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, following the meeting with labour leaders in Abuja, which started at 5 pm and ended just before 11 pm.
Akume stated that the President is “committed to a national minimum wage that is higher than N60,000”.
Furthermore, the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (NMW) will now meet daily for one week to agree on the actual amount for the new minimum wage.
The resolutions reached at the meeting between the federal government and the organised labour on Monday, June 3, 2024, are as follows:
1. Further to the negotiation by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (NMW) and the subsequent withdrawal of Labour from the negotiation, the Leadership of the National Assembly intervened on June 2, 2024. The Organised Labour declared a nationwide strike on Monday, June 3, 2024, to drive home its demands.
2. In the national interest, the Federal Government convened a meeting with Labour at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday, June 3, with the aim of ending the strike action.
3. After exhaustive deliberations and engagements by both parties, the following resolutions were reached:
i. The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000.
ii. Arising from the above, the Tripartite Committee is to meet every day for the next week to arrive at an agreeable National Minimum Wage.
iii. Labour, in deference to the high esteem of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria’s commitment, undertakes to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment.
iv. No worker will be victimized as a result of the industrial action.
This agreement was made in Abuja on June 3, 2024.

The organised Labour, comprising the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, had declared an indefinite nationwide strike over the federal government's inability to pay Nigerian workers a living wage.
