The Nigerian government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has invited leaders and stakeholders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to an emergency meeting regarding the ongoing nationwide strike.
The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday at the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, aims to propose a convincing minimum wage to end the strike.
The labour union commenced an indefinite strike on Monday, despite last-minute efforts by the National Assembly leadership to prevent it.
Representatives of the organized labour stated on Sunday that they lacked the authority to call off the strike and affirmed that it would proceed as planned.
Labour leaders, however, promised to meet internally to discuss the appeal made by the Senate and House of Representatives leadership to suspend the strike, in order to avoid exacerbating the hardships faced by Nigerians.
The strike has significantly affected major sectors of the country, including the judiciary, aviation, and education.
Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to President Tinubu on information and strategy, claimed that the strike was driven by personal grudges against the current government.
He argued that the strike was harming Nigerians by disrupting activities in hospitals, airports, and other government agencies.
