In a significant move to enhance public health and safety, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced a strategic partnership with the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
This collaboration aims to intensify efforts against drug counterfeiting, abuse, and the distribution of unwholesome foods.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, revealed the initiative in a statement released on Saturday in Abuja. Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that the partnership extends to combating the unauthorized handling of chemicals, which has been identified as a contributing factor to terrorist activities and other criminal enterprises within the country.
"This partnership is a critical step in our fight against the threats posed by counterfeit drugs and unsafe food products. By working closely with the NCTC-ONSA, we aim to disrupt the supply chains that enable these dangerous practices," said Prof. Adeyeye.
The agreement was solidified during a recent courtesy visit by a delegation from the NCTC-ONSA, led by its National Coordinator, Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, to NAFDAC's headquarters in Abuja. The visit underscored the shared commitment of both agencies to safeguarding public health and national security.
With this alliance, NAFDAC and the NCTC-ONSA plan to implement robust measures to monitor and control the distribution of drugs and chemicals, thereby reducing the risk of them being diverted for illicit uses. The partnership is expected to leverage the strengths and expertise of both organizations to achieve a significant reduction in the prevalence of counterfeit drugs and unsafe food products in Nigeria.
