In a major drug bust at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, two businessmen and a nurse based in Canada have been apprehended for their alleged involvement in trafficking cocaine and "loud" – a potent strain of cannabis.
The suspects were intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) during routine checks as they attempted to smuggle the illegal substances.
The arrests took place over the weekend, with authorities uncovering 3.2 kg of cocaine and multiple packages of loud, concealed in luggage and personal items.
The NDLEA reported that the nurse had concealed the cocaine in specially made linings within her luggage, while the businessmen hid the loud in various packages disguised as food items.
According to NDLEA spokesperson, the suspects were en route to Canada when they were detained, raising concerns about international drug trafficking networks using Nigeria as a transit point.
“This arrest is a significant breakthrough in our efforts to combat drug smuggling, especially involving well-established professionals,” the spokesperson noted.
The suspects are currently in NDLEA custody and face charges related to drug trafficking, which carries severe penalties under Nigerian law.
The agency is intensifying its investigation to determine the extent of the network involved and whether there are additional collaborators both within Nigeria and abroad.
This latest operation highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking at Nigerian airports, as the NDLEA steps up efforts to curb the illicit trade and secure the nation’s borders.
Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activities, emphasizing that trafficking illegal substances poses significant risks not only to individuals but also to national security.
If convicted, the suspects could face lengthy prison sentences, a stark reminder of the consequences of involvement in drug-related crimes.
