NDLEA Seizes Opioids Worth Over N7 Billion in Major Bust at Apapa and Onne Seaports

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted illicit opioids valued at over N7 billion at Apapa and Onne seaports.
The seized drugs, comprising tramadol and other dangerous substances, mark one of the agency's largest operations to date.

The bust took place after intelligence reports hinted at the presence of suspicious cargo. Working closely with port authorities, NDLEA operatives launched a coordinated operation at both seaports, leading to the discovery of the massive drug haul.

The opioids, which were concealed in shipments declared as legitimate goods, are believed to have been smuggled into the country by an international drug trafficking syndicate.

The Chairman and Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), praised the efforts of the agency’s officers for their vigilance and determination in thwarting what could have been a devastating influx of illegal drugs into Nigeria.

He noted that the seizure would have far-reaching impacts on disrupting the illicit drug market, which has fueled various societal issues, including addiction and criminal activity.

“This operation is a testament to our commitment to ridding Nigeria of illicit drugs. We will continue to intensify our efforts to ensure that our country is not used as a transit hub for illegal substances,” Marwa stated.

Authorities are currently investigating the origin of the shipment and the parties involved, with several suspects already being questioned.

NDLEA has vowed to bring all perpetrators to justice, reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking.

The agency’s recent successes have highlighted the critical role of intelligence and inter-agency cooperation in combating drug smuggling.

The latest bust serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against narcotics in Nigeria and the need for continued vigilance at all points of entry into the country.

This major seizure follows a series of other drug interdiction efforts by NDLEA, reflecting its strengthened resolve to combat the growing drug problem that has plagued Nigeria.
