Akpabio Vows Senate Will Not Be Bullied Over Tax Reform Bills

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has asserted that the Senate will not succumb to pressure or intimidation as it deliberates on the controversial tax reform bills, emphasizing that the Upper Chamber’s actions will prioritize the interests of Nigerians.

Speaking during Thursday's plenary session, Akpabio dismissed claims that the tax bills had been withdrawn, affirming the Senate’s resolve to address them meticulously.

He highlighted provisions in the bills aimed at easing financial burdens on citizens and reassured Nigerians of the Senate’s commitment to acting independently.

“The Senate will not be bullied. We are doing our work in the interest of Nigerians. We don’t take orders from anyone or any office, no matter how highly placed,” Akpabio declared.

The Senate president also announced that the Finance Committee tasked with scrutinizing the proposed legislation has been given six weeks to submit its report, with the possibility of an extension if needed.

In a related development, the Senate reshuffled the membership of the committee liaising with the federal government delegation on the tax reform bills. Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno was removed and replaced by Senator Kaka Shehu of Borno Central.

Akpabio explained that this decision was part of a consensus reached in a closed-door session, emphasizing that principal officers should not serve on such committees.

The Senate president reiterated the chamber’s independence and its role as a custodian of the public’s interest, assuring Nigerians that the tax reform bills would be thoroughly examined before any legislative decisions are made.

This stance reflects the Upper Chamber's determination to maintain its autonomy while addressing critical economic issues affecting the country.
