A devastating tanker explosion on Saturday morning at Dikko Junction, along the Niger-Kaduna expressway, has left many residents feared dead and others with varying degrees of injuries.
The incident occurred after a petrol tanker, traveling at high speed, overturned and spilled its contents on the tarred road.
According to eyewitness accounts, residents and bystanders rushed to the scene to scoop the petrol, but tragedy struck when the tanker exploded, engulfing the area in flames.
Many of those closest to the tanker were burnt beyond recognition, while those at a distance managed to escape with severe burns and injuries.
The Chief Press Secretary to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, Bologi Ibrahim, confirmed the incident during the governor's inspection visit to Suleja and Tafa Local Government Areas. In a statement, Governor Bago expressed his shock and sorrow over the tragic event, describing it as "heartbreaking and unfortunate."
“The governor sympathizes deeply with the families of the victims and prays for the souls of the departed. He urges the public to prioritize their safety and avoid such dangerous situations. This incident underscores the importance of caution and responsibility on our roads,” Ibrahim said.
Governor Bago also directed all relevant government agencies and humanitarian organizations to take immediate action to restore normalcy to the affected area.
He called on security agents to ensure the safety of the site and provide support to emergency response efforts.
The governor’s statement highlighted the critical need for awareness and vigilance, emphasizing that incidents like this are preventable.
“Residents must understand the dangers of engaging with spilled petrol or any hazardous materials, especially in uncontrolled environments,” he added.
Dikko Junction, a critical point along the busy Abuja-Kaduna expressway, has witnessed similar incidents in the past, raising concerns about road safety and the management of fuel transportation.
