Elder statesman and chieftain of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, Pa Ayodele Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96.
Pa Adebanjo, a staunch advocate for democracy and good governance, breathed his last on Friday morning, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.
His family confirmed the news in a statement made available to the press. The statement, jointly signed by his children, Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, described him as a man who dedicated his life to fighting for truth, equity, and justice.
The family expressed their deep loss, noting that his unwavering belief in a truly independent and progressive Nigeria remained his life’s mission until his final breath.
The statement further revealed that consultations are currently underway with Adebanjo’s friends, associates, and various interest groups across Nigeria and beyond to arrange a befitting farewell for the respected leader.
Funeral details will be announced in due course. Meanwhile, a condolence register has been opened at his residence in Lagos and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, where sympathizers have begun paying their respects.
Pa Adebanjo played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s political evolution, particularly in the struggle for democracy and federalism.
As the former Organising Secretary of the Action Group, he was a close associate of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and remained a steadfast voice in Yoruba and national politics for decades.
He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His passing marks the end of an era for progressive politics and the Yoruba socio-political movement.
