In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court of Nigeria on Friday reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), overturning previous court decisions that had affirmed his removal.
The apex court, in a unanimous judgment delivered by a five-member panel, ruled that issues concerning the leadership and membership of a political party remain an internal affair and are beyond the jurisdiction of the judiciary.
The ruling effectively nullified the December 20, 2024, judgment of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, which had upheld an earlier ruling by the Federal High Court in Enugu, removing Anyanwu from office.
The Supreme Court faulted the decision of the Federal High Court, stating that it lacked the legal authority to entertain the case brought by one Aniagwu Emmanuel, challenging Anyanwu’s position within the party.
This verdict brings an end to months of legal battles over Anyanwu’s leadership within the PDP, reaffirming his role as the party’s National Secretary. The ruling is expected to have significant political implications as the PDP prepares for upcoming elections.
