Fear and uncertainty have gripped residents of Ukhun Community in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State following a deadly attack by suspected herdsmen.
The assault, which occurred late in the evening, claimed the life of a local farmer and left several others with severe injuries.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants stormed the community wielding dangerous weapons, launching an unprovoked attack on unsuspecting farmers and villagers.
Residents reported sounds of gunshots and frantic calls for help as people fled for safety.
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, condemned the attack and expressed deep concern over the rising insecurity in the area.
"This is not the first time we've faced such brutality. Our people can no longer farm in peace because of these violent invasions," he lamented.
Local authorities have confirmed the attack, stating that security agencies have been deployed to restore calm and investigate the perpetrators.
"We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice," a police spokesperson assured.
Meanwhile, residents are calling on the Edo State government and federal security forces to take immediate action to prevent further bloodshed.
The attack has reignited debates on the ongoing farmer-herder crisis in Nigeria, with many urging authorities to implement lasting solutions to curb the violence.
As the community mourns the loss of their own, tensions remain high, and the call for justice grows louder.
