Sports Minister Enoh Applauds NFF for ‘Buying Local’ at Unveiling of New Nigeria Coach Finidi

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) recently unveiled Finidi George as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, succeeding Gernot Rohr.
Speaking at the ceremony, Nigeria's Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, praised the NFF for settling for an indigenous coach despite the numerous foreign applicants.

Enoh, who was a student of the University of Calabar, expressed his excitement at seeing George take up the position, stating that he used to watch the former winger play for Calabar Rovers.

President of the NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, expressed his delight with the new chapter the federation was opening, adding that the football-governing body was determined to fully support George and his assistants to lead the Super Eagles to new heights. Gusau revealed that the federation gave George the free hand to pick his assistants, and the tactician has already chosen Daniel Amokachi and Benjamin James as assistants, as well as Olatunji Baruwa (goalkeepers’ trainer), Chima Onyeike (Fitness Trainer) and Mehmet Ozturk (Analyst).

George, who was part of the technical crew that came close to winning the AFCON, stated that he would invite only players who feature regularly at their clubs either in Nigeria or in the diaspora for international assignments. He also promised that the Super Eagles would remain even more competitive in the years ahead. The new coach's first target is to ensure that the team qualifies for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by winning the upcoming matches against South Africa and Benin Republic, and also to prepare the team for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

George expressed his intention to add value to the team and put himself in a position to earn even more than he would be earning from the take-off. He assured everyone that there would be no controversy regarding his relationship with the players, stating that he had always had a cordial relationship with them as an assistant coach. George promised to ensure the team starts functioning properly and winning games again. He called for the support of everyone, stating that although the job was not easy, with the support of everyone, they could achieve their objectives.

The ceremony was attended by NFF 1st Vice President, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu; NFF Board Members Alhaji Sharif Rabiu Inuwa and Mr. Timothy Heman Magaji; Deputy General Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme; Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen; GMD of GTI, Alhaji Abubakar Lawal; Adviser/Consultant to Hon. Minister, Ken Egbas; NFF directors Babatunde Akinsanya, Ademola Olajire, Okey Obi, Ali Abubakar Muhammad and Dayo Enebi Achor; prominent football stakeholders Jude Anyadufu and Abubakar Danfulani and; former Nigeria internationals Pascal Patrick and Nasiru Jibril.
