The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed off a pharmacy located on Onitsha Crescent, Area 11 –Garki, Abuja, for selling expired and unregistered drugs.
This decisive action followed a tip-off from a concerned citizen and resulted in the confiscation of expired products valued at over seven million naira.
NAFDAC, in a statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, revealed that the enforcement team discovered several expired items, including “H-Pylori” test kits, which pose significant health risks to the public.
The agency disclosed that the pharmacy’s Managing Director and Superintendent Pharmacist were arrested for questioning to facilitate further investigations.
The statement read: “NAFDAC has sealed off a pharmacy located at Onitsha Crescent, Area 11 – Garki, Abuja, for selling expired and unregistered drugs.
Acting on a tip-off from a concerned citizen, NAFDAC’s enforcement team uncovered several expired items worth over seven million naira, including expired ‘H-Pylori’ test kits, which posed significant risks to public health.
“Despite attempts by the pharmacy staff to obstruct the operation, the enforcement team successfully confiscated the expired products and secured the premises.
The pharmacy’s Managing Director and Superintendent Pharmacist were arrested for further questioning, while stringent sanctions will be imposed as a deterrent to unethical practices.”
The agency emphasized its commitment to protecting public health and urged citizens to remain vigilant when purchasing regulated products.
NAFDAC also encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office, reiterating the importance of collective efforts in combating the distribution of harmful and unapproved drugs.
This enforcement operation underscores NAFDAC’s ongoing campaign to ensure compliance with drug safety regulations and protect Nigerians from the dangers posed by unethical practices in the pharmaceutical industry.
